The Ayendi Commonwealth

The Ayendi Commonwealth, usually just shortened to the Commonwealth or CW, is a long running experiment in societal organization and is one of the most stable civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy. It is effectively a state communist government, organized around a powerful distributed AI known as Synco, and follows the Viable System Model approach to economic and social organization.

The Commonwealth is almost totally successful in its aim to provide safe and comfortable lives for its citizens. Fundamental necessities are guaranteed and industry is mostly automated, affording many people the opportunity to live a life of leisure and pursue hobbies, travel, or engage in education and scientific discovery. Those interested in formal work can find it in universities or worker syndicates/unions/guilds that provide free education and community.

Almost as soon as the Commonwealth developed spacefaring technology, they began intense research into space habitats and large starships. Ships became the preferred societal unit, as they are mobile, self-sufficient and can be made in sizes as small as a city or as large as a continent. The Commonwealth maintains a number of stationary habitats and planetary establishments in the core of its sphere of influence, which some prefer and see as the "real" Commonwealth.

Politically, the Commonwealth falls into a gray area of partial recognition by other spacefaring civilizations. They are bordered by the Cstari Omnocracy to galactic North, the Galactic Federation to the west, Galgan Hegemony to the Southwest, and share a fuzzy border with the AOC to the Southeast. The Cstari and GalFed are highly skeptical and dismissive of the Commonwealth, seeing them as nomads at best and interlopers at worst. There is a long history of war between the Hegemony and the CW, though relations have improved over time and the distinction between the two is fading as the Hegemony grows past its expansionist policies. The CW and the AOC still see themselves as siblings, though the AOC grows more distant and insular by the century. Lastly of course, the ODSA refuses any kind of meaningful contact and must be routinely fought back to keep it from threatening the galaxy again.
